Articulated Trucks

An articulated dump truck (ADT) is a cross between a regular dump truck and a tractor trailer. Featuring drive and loading sections that operate independent of one another, articulated trucks are extremely versatile. An oscillating ring and pivot connect the two sections and allow the front and back to move in different directions while its 6 X 6 drive pushes all the wheels over large obstacles despite heavy loads. 6 X 4 and 4 X 4 models are also available, but they are less common. Top performance ADT's can haul up to 40 tons.

As you might expect, ADT's are rarely practical for residential use. Instead, these trucks are generally owned by large construction, forestry, and mining companies where they frequently encounter heavy terrain. Still, you may wish to become an independent contractor and provide usage of an ADT for a fee. These ventures can be extremely profitable offering incredible hourly rates if you find companies that are interested in using your truck. But you should remember that dump trucks are much less expensive and offer the same service provided terrain is not an issue.

Articulated Truck Renting. Occasionally, there may be instances when you might wish to rent an articulated truck. ADT's rent daily, weekly, or monthly. The longer you keep the truck the cheaper it is per day. Daily rentals average $800-$1500/day, $2500-$4000/week, and $7000-$15000/month. For rates in your area, see Construction Equipment for Rent.

Articulated Truck Purchasing. If you are looking to purchase an articulated truck, the cost of your ADT will depend on its capacity. Generally speaking, the average cost for a new ADT with a 25-30 ton capacity is about $280,000. If you are looking for something even larger, artic trucks capable of pulling more than 30 tons average just over $400,000. Manufacturers include Caterpillar, Volvo, John Deere, JCB, Komatsu, Terex, Moxy, New Holland, and Case. Used articulated dump trucks clearly cost less. For pricing, see Construction Equipment.
