Bucket Loader

A bucket loader is just another term for any kind of heavy equipment used to move debris from one place to another. The term loader refers specifically to the scoop, bucket, or shovel extending from the front of the machine. It is called a "loader" because it is usually used for bucket-loading loose debris from an excavation site into a dump truck.

Though models vary, there are four general kinds of bucket loaders:

  • Backhoe loader: features a loader on one end and an excavator on the other
  • Crawler/track loader: features track or tread rather than wheels
  • Wheel loader: features wheels rather than track or tread
  • Skid-steer loader: features a loader that is lifted on hydraulic arms (called the boom) from behind the cab, allowing the driver to lift debris well above eye level as well as wheels that can turn in opposing directions.

Often, bucket loaders feature attachments which can replace the loader itself. Possible attachments include plows, brooms, blades, forks, grapples, rakes, and more.

Because bucket loaders come in so many varieties, they are often more practical for residential use than other heavy equipment. Models range from the compact and affordable to the heaviest articulated models which can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. As a result, a loader can be owned by a large construction company or residential constructor alike. One of the most common reasons people purchase bucket loaders is to become independent contractors and provide usage for a fee. These ventures can be extremely profitable offering incredible hourly rates if you find contractors that don't already own the same loader.

Bucket Loaders for Rent. Still, it is often more practical to rent bucket loaders than to own them. You can rent a loader daily, weekly, or monthly depending on your need. The longer you keep a loader, the cheaper it is per day. Depending on the model, bucket loaders rent for $200-$800/day, $900-$2500/week, and $2000-$6000/month. For rates in your area see Construction Equipment for Rent.

Bucket Loaders for Sale. If you are looking to purchase a loader, its cost will depend on the loader's size, age, features, and manufacturer. Used bucket loaders cost $3000 to $130,000 (see Construction Equipment for prices). A New loader can cost as much as $200,000. Manufacturers include Caterpillar, Volvo, John Deere, JCB, Komatsu, Terex, Moxy, New Holland, Link Belt, Case, and Bobcat. For the cost to finance or lease a new loader contact a dealer near you.
