Mini Excavator

A mini excavator is one of the most common types of heavy equipment used in construction. Equipped with a hydraulic arm and bucket that can be maneuvered to dig, break up concrete, and move debris short distances, a miniexcavator is essential for any construction project involving excavation. These smaller excavators vary in size and features and can come with either tires or tread.

Until recently, excavators have been impractical for residential use. Instead, these excavators were generally owned by large construction, forestry, and mining companies. Today, however, there has been a movement for smaller, mini excavators. Led by companies like Bobcat, these small excavators are compact enough for residential construction jobs and are also more affordable. There is also a growing field for independent contractors who purchase excavators and provide service for a fee. These ventures can be extremely profitable, offering excellent hourly rates if you find construction companies that need excavation work.

Renting Mini Excavators. Occasionally, there may be instances when you will want to look at mini excavators to rent. If that is the case, mini excavators rent daily, weekly, or monthly. The longer you keep the excavator the cheaper it will be per day. Rentals average $150-$300/day, $500-$1000/week, and $1500-$3000/month. Excavator rates vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. For rates in your area see Construction Equipment for Rent.

Purchasing Mini Excavators. If you want to purchase a small excavator, the cost will depend on the brand and its capacity. Generally speaking, the cost for used mini excavators varies between $10,000 and $60,000. See Used Construction Equipment. New mini excavators average from $20,000-$100,000. Manufacturers include Caterpillar, Volvo, John Deere, JCB, Komatsu, Terex, Moxy, New Holland, Link Belt, Case, and Bobcat. For costs of individual excavators contact a dealer near you.
