Front Loaders

A front loader, or loader, is a general term used to refer to any kind of heavy equipment used to move debris from one place to another. The term front loader refers specifically to the scoop, bucket, or shovel extending from the front of the machine. It is called a "loader" because it is usually used to load loose debris from an excavation site into a dump truck.

Though models vary, there are four general kinds of front end loaders:

  1. Backhoe loader: features a loader on one end and an excavator on the other
  2. Crawler/track loader: features track or tread rather than wheels
  3. Wheel loader: features wheels rather than track or tread
  4. Skid-steer loader: features a loader that is lifted on hydraulic arms (called the boom) from behind the cab, allowing the driver to lift debris well above eye level as well as wheels that can turn in opposing directions.

Often, a front end loader can come with attachments which can replace the loader itself. Possible attachments include plows, brooms, blades, forks, grapples, rakes, and more.

Because a front loader can come in so many varieties, it is often more practical for residential use than other heavy equipment. Models range from the compact and affordable to large models which can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. As a result, a front loader can be owned by a large construction company or residential constructor alike. One of the most common reasons to purchase a loader is to become an independent contractor and provide usage for a fee. These ventures can be extremely profitable offering incredible hourly rates if you find contractors that don't already own the same loader.

Front Loader Rental. Still, it is often more practical to rent a front loader than own one. If that is the case, you can rent front end loaders daily, weekly, or monthly depending on your need. The longer you keep a loader, the cheaper it is per day. Depending on the model, a loader rents daily $200-$800/day, weekly for $900-$2500. Monthly rates go from $2000-$6000. For rates in your area, see Construction Equipment for Rent.

Front Loader Sales. If you are looking to purchase a front loader, its cost will depend on the loader's size, age, features, and manufacturer. A used front loader costs between $3000 and $130,000. For prices, see Construction Equipment. A new front loader can cost as much as $200,000. Manufacturers include Caterpillar, Volvo, John Deere, JCB, Komatsu, Terex, Moxy, New Holland, Link Belt, Case, Bobcat and more.
