Loader Backhoe

A loader backhoe is one of the most popular and versatile pieces of heavy equipment available. The backhoe loader's versatility comes from its multifunctionality. Its front end is equipped with a large scoop (or loader) used to move, spread, and load debris, while its back end features a backhoe (or bucket on a hydraulic arm) which can excavate, break up, and lift debris. Unique to backhoe loaders, the driver sits in a cab that can pivot--facing either forwards or backwards--allowing the driver to focus on different tasks.

Until recently, loader backhoes have been impractical for residential use. Instead, these machines were generally owned by large construction, forestry, and mining companies. Today, however, there has been a movement for smaller, more compact loader backhoes. Led by companies like Bobcat, these loader backhoes are compact enough for residential construction jobs and are also more affordable. There is also a growing field for independent contractors who own loader backhoes and provide service for a fee. These ventures can be extremely profitable offering incredible hourly rates if you find construction companies that are interested in using a backhoe loader.

Backhoe Loader Renting. Occasionally, there may be instances when you will want to rent a backhoe loader. If that is the case, loader backhoes rent daily, weekly, or monthly. The longer you keep the backhoe, the cheaper it is per day. Rentals average $200-$400/day, $600-$1200/week, and $1400-$2500/month. Backhoe rental rates will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. For rates in your area see Construction Equipment for Rent.

Backhoe Loader Purchasing. If you are looking to purchase an backhoe loader, its cost will depend on the brand and its capacity. Generally speaking, the cost for a used backhoe loader varies between $10,000 and $60,000. See Used Construction Equipment. New tractor loader backhoes average $50,000-$100,000. Manufacturers include Caterpillar, Volvo, John Deere, JCB, Komatsu, Terex, Moxy, New Holland, Link Belt, Case, and Bobcat. For costs of individual models, contact a dealer near you.
