Log Loaders

Commonly known as a knuckleboom loader, a log loader is used to move logs from the forest onto a truck so that they can be taken to the mill. Similar to an excavator, a log loader features an extremely strong hydraulic arm or boom. The end of the boom is fitted with a large grapple that then can pick up multiple logs, loading them onto a lumber truck. Generally, log loaders are equipped with large tires that can maneuver over rough terrain, and some even feature articulated bodies for enhanced maneuverability. Usually, a log loading machine also features different attachments for moving different kinds of loads.

As you might expect, you will rarely see a log loader in someone's garage. That is because a log loader is extremely expensive and difficult to store. Instead, most knuckleboom loaders are owned by large logging companies. The one exception is individuals who purchase a log loader to become an independent contractor and provide usage for a fee. These ventures can be extremely profitable offering incredible hourly rates if you find a company that doesn't already own a log loader.

Log Loader Rental. Because a log loader has such a specific job, there are not many places that will rent them. As a result, it is usually easier to rent an excavator with a grapple attachment. There are probably not many instances when you would need a log loader unless you are in the logging business, and an excavator with a grapple should be sufficient for most minor projects, Depending on the model, an excavator rents daily for $200-$1000, weekly for $1200-$3200, and monthly for $2900-$9600.
