Road graders are mostly utilized for leveling--or grading--a road prior to construction. In many ways, graders for roads are the most uniform of all heavy construction equipment. Most graders have six tires with a 12 foot adjustable blade situated beneath the cab to push and spread gravel. They are generally all-wheel drive and often feature articulated bodies for added control. A road motor grader typically weighs around 15 tons, is about 28 feet long, and has 150-180 horsepower. This uniformity is due to the fact that almost every road grader is used for public road maintenance. As a result, manufacturers cater to their largest client--public works entities. As you might expect, a grader for the road is rarely practical for residential use. Instead, these machines are generally owned by large companies who frequently have to build and repair roads. Still, there is the possibility that you are looking for a road motor grader to become an independent contractor and provide usage for a fee. These ventures can be extremely profitable offering incredible hourly rates if you find companies that don't already own a motor grader. Grader Rental. On the other hand, there are often instances when you might wish to rent a grader. If that is the case, graders for the road rent daily, weekly, or monthly. The longer you keep them the cheaper graders are per day. Rentals average $300-$800/day, $900-$3000/week, and $3000-$8000/month. For rates in your area, see Construction Equipment for Rent. Grader Purchasing. If you are looking at graders to purchase, the cost of a road motor grader will depend almost exclusively on the age and manufacturer. Used graders average from $4000 to $100,000. For the most complete listing of used graders see Construction Equipment. A new motor grader can cost as much as $200,000. The thing to remember, however, is that graders for the road have changed very little in the last 50 years. In other words, purchasing used graders can save you a lot of money without sacrificing quality. When it comes to motor grading the manufacturers include Caterpillar, John Deere, Komatsu, Champion, Terex, Moxy, New Holland, Link Belt, and Case.
