Skidders

A skidder is a piece of heavy equipment used to move logs and other cumbersome debris that can't be picked up by a loader. Resembling an excavator with a short, heavy duty boom, a skidder features a huge grapple rather than a bucket. The grapple is used to pick up debris such as logs, which the skidder then drags to a place where they can be loaded onto a truck. Skidders often feature large tires or tracks so that they can maneuver over rough terrain.

As you may expect, a skidder is extremely large and expensive and is rarely practical for residential use. Instead, they are reserved almost exclusively for large logging and construction companies. Still, you may be interested in a skidder to become an independent contractor and provide usage for a fee. Such ventures can be extremely profitable offering outstanding hourly rates, providing you can find companies in need of a skidder.

Skidder Rental. Because a skidder is so large and expensive it is usually more practical to rent one than to own it. Unfortunately, finding a place that has a skidder to rent can be difficult. Your best bet is by searching for forestry equipment at Construction Equipment for Rent or by contacting Caterpillar or John Deere, the main skidder manufacturers. Generally, you can rent a skidder daily, weekly, or monthly depending on your need.

Skidder Sales. If you are looking to purchase a skidder, its cost will depend on its size, age, features, and manufacturer. A used skidder costs between $20,000 and $120,000.
