Tonka Grader

No, Tonka does not make a real life-sized working heavy construction grader--their business is still toys. And though Tonka no longer stocks graders in their "mighty" truck line, they do sell one in a package deal with a dump truck, called the " Tonka Toughs 2-Pack: Grader & Quarry Dump." These trucks feature construction yellow steel construction and deep-cleated plastic tires. The Tonka grader has five Tonka grading settings and the dump truck has a realistic, tilt-back action. The dimensions of each truck are respectively 17Lx8Wx7H for the grader and 14Lx6Wx7H for the dump truck. They are generally recommended for kids ages 3 and up. The set sells for around $20 at Toysrus.com.

Though you have probably seen road graders on construction sites, you may be unsure as to what a grader is or does. A road grader is a piece of heavy machinery used to level roads. They are particularly necessary when it comes to leveling or "grading" a road or path prior to construction. Most graders have six tires with an adjustable blade situated beneath the cab to push and spread gravel. A real motor grader typically weighs around 15 tons and is about 28 feet long.

If you like Tonka's grader, the chances are you will be interested in the entire Tonka Toughs set. There are two more trucks in an additional 2-pack with a working trencher backhoe ( 17Lx5Wx9H) and a bulldozer ( 13Lx8Wx8H) . Though the backhoe can be a bit difficult to operate, most children eventually figure it out. The set also goes for $20 at toyrus.com.

If you are interested in Tonka's other trucks, they have a "mighty" line and a "junior basic" line. Tonka's "mighty" line, which are larger and more realistic than the "Tonka Toughs," include a dump truck, a crane, a front loader (bulldozer) and a backhoe. Each is also available at toysrus.com for about $25. The "junior basic" line includes a tow truck and dump truck. They are all plastic and go for $6-10.
