Used Skidders

A skidder is a piece of heavy equipment used to move logs and other cumbersome debris that can't be picked up by your everyday loader. Resembling an excavator with a short, heavy duty boom, a skidder features a huge grapple rather than a bucket; this grapple picks up and moves debris such as logs. Because skidders are often very expensive, it is often better to purchase them used than new. Used skidders usually feature large tires or track so that they can maneuver over rough terrain.

As you may expect, skidders are extremely large and expensive. As a result, they are rarely practical for residential use. Instead, they are reserved almost exclusively for large logging and construction companies. Still, you may be interested in a secondhand skidder to become an independent contractor and provide usage for a fee. Such ventures can be extremely profitable offering outstanding hourly rates, providing you can find companies in need of a used skidder.

Used Skidder for Sale. The cost of a used skidder will depend on its size, age, features, and manufacturer and can range between $15,000 and $120,000. But you can also save money by going to equipment auctions or online traders. For a listing of auctions that might have skidders in your area, see Rock & Dirt. A few of the best online traders and auctions include the following:

  • Machinery Trader: Features a vast database of pre-owned forestry equipment and other heavy equipment. Searchable by builder, model, age, location, and more
  • Iron Planet: The best online auction. Every skidder is inspected and includes unmodified pictures and spec sheets to view online.
  • Equipment Trader Online: Similar to Machinery Trader. Includes skidder pictures, payment calculator, financing, and more.

You can also purchase a used skidder through the manufacturer. Skidder manufacturers include Caterpillar, John Deere, Terex, and a few more.

Skidder for Rent. Even used, a skidder can be large and expensive. As a result, it is often more practical to rent one than to own it. Unfortunately, finding a place that has a skidder to rent can be difficult. Your best bet is by searching for forestry equipment at Construction Equipment for Rent or by contacting Caterpillar or John Deere, the main skidder manufacturers. Generally, you can rent a skidder daily, weekly, or monthly depending on your need.
